Senator Welch Hosts the American Federation for Suicide Prevention

State Senator James T. Welch met with representatives from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) in his Boston office on February 14th.

In an effort to raise awareness of the AFSP, Senator Welch displayed two Memory Quilts in his office.  The Memory Quilt Program, which began in 1997, is a collaborative tribute created by survivors of suicide loss as an effort to put a human face on the tragedy of suicide.

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention engages five core strategies:

  • Funds scientific research
  • Offers educational programs for professionals
  • Educates the public about mood disorders and suicide prevention
  • Promotes policies and legislation that impact suicide and prevention
  • Provides programs and resources for survivors of suicide loss and people at risk
