Senator Welch to embark on local library tour

In January 2020, Senator James T. Welch (D-West Springfield) will begin visiting local public libraries in observance of the importance that libraries play in our communities. The tours, which will begin on January 6th at the Springfield Central Library, will run through the end of February. The tours will take place in the Hampden district and will include Springfield, West Springfield, and Chicopee.

“It’s always great to have conversations about the Massachusetts Legislature and Senate with members of the local community,” said Senator Welch, D-Springfield. “That’s why it is important that these meetings happen in local libraries, as they serve as a central hub in our cities and towns.”

Senator Welch has stressed the importance that libraries play in their communities, specifically the free access to information. Many people rely on the libraries located in their towns and cities for this free access.

“Senator Welch is helping raise awareness about how important libraries are to our communities,” said James Lonergan, Director of the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. “Libraries help all of us, no matter what our age, to never stop learning.”

Librarians teach people, including kids and senior citizens, how to use digital tools such as computers, smartphones and apps. Libraries offer programming and resources that help people improve their health and financial literacy, learn a new language, complete their GED, explore their ancestry, or learn a new skill like bee-keeping, creative writing or coding. People go to their libraries to hear authors speak, view local art, be part of a book group or attend a concert. “Technology changes, our interests and needs change. What doesn’t change is the vital role our libraries play in making those changes possible,” said Lonergan.

Libraries are busier than ever. In fact, over 35 million children, teens and adults visited a Massachusetts public library in the past year; more than attended entire seasons of Red Sox, Bruins, Celtics, and Patriots games combined.
